ABOUT US

Gorey Photographic Club is a small but progressive club that suits every level of expertise and we are always trying to improve.

The club was formed because we believe it is essential to meet other photography enthusiasts and having everyone share their knowledge is priceless. Everyone here is interested in different fields of photography and the main subjects we cover are Landscape, Portrait, Macro, Wildlife & Still Life and the more experienced photographers are encouraged to share their knowledge with anyone who is interested in learning.

Throughout the calendar year we have a busy schedule of events covering competitions, workshops, guest speakers and post processing in lightroom and photoshop. We also think that participation is key so getting involved in competitions, workshops and exhibitions is very important to hone your skills.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

During the month of August we have had an annual exhibition in the Gorey Library

Its 10th year this year and it’s always a privilege for us to hold our annual exhibition in the local library which runs for the month of August. Every year the standard of photography on display surpasses the previous year. If the exhibition goes ahead this year it could very well be the best one yet.

Gorey Night Run

Over the last few years we have got out to photography the Gorey Night Run which is a great opportunity for members to put what they’ve been learning to the test. Always a great turn out for a very worthy cause.

MEMBERS DISTINCTIONS

After the clubs success in November 2019 where 4 of the club members received distinctions from the Irish Photographic Federation. September 2024 saw 5 members being successful in the distinction sitting in Portlaoise.

One of the key services provided by the federation is the IPF Distinctions service. Individual photographers present their work before the distinctions judges, who assess whether the applicant should be awarded the relevant distinction applied for.

On November 29th 2019 it was a very nervous day for 4 of our members when they attended their distinction sitting in Thurles. William Stedmond, Marie Breen and Justin Mortimer were going for their Licentiateship and Brian Kinsella was going for his Associateship after receiving his Licentiateship back in September 2017. At the end of the day it was success all round and a big sigh of relief from everyone involved.

It was similar nerves in September 2024 when 5 members waitied patiently for the judges vote. On the day Eilish Ryan, Frank Duke, Noel Howard and Philip Sharpe were all successful and received their LIPF honours and Marie Breen revieved her AIPF honours. After working very hard in the months leading up to this everyone was delighted with the outcome.

CLUB OUTINGS

The Saltee Islands

It is definitely the highlight of the year for most members when we get our annual trip to photograph the wildlife on the Saltee Islands. From the boat trip out, endless photo opportunities once there and then the chips from the local chipper when we’re back on dry land, it really is an enjoyable day trip.

Birds of Prey

Every year we have the opportunity to have a workshop with Colin and his Birds of Prey. It’s great to have the chance to get up close to these beautiful birds.

Long Exposure Photography

Another club favourite is getting out to try our hand at long exposure photography whether it’s the fireworks display in Wexford town or steel wool spinning down on a local beach.

Sunrise or Sunset on the Beach

We are lucky enough to live close enough to some fabulous beaches and there’s often an impromptu decision to meet up for sunrise or sunset. Its a great place to clear the head.

Edenvale

Another favourite spot for a lot of our members is Edenvale, just outside Castlebridge. With plenty of different waterfalls to chose from, it’s a great place to spend a summers evening.

FROM IRELAND TO Iceland

In September 2018 4 of our members  took their cameras for a trip to Iceland  and had the experience of a lifetime. We hope, in the not too distant future, we will be able to plan something like this again.
